Western Isles Health Board Maintenance Backlog

13 March 2009

Commenting on the revelation that there was a £3.5 million backlog in the maintenance of hospitals in the Western Isles Peter Peacock, Highlands and Islands Labour regional MSP said ,

"Itís disturbing to learn about this backlog.

"It is well known that the Scottish Government is squeezing the budgets of the health boards, making their task more difficult.

"What is particularly disturbing in the context of the islands economy is that if they had the money and were able to meet the demands to keep their buildings up to standard this would also be creating much needed jobs for island contractors and workers."

Mr Peacock added, "I will be writing to the health board and raising the need for the Scottish Government to ensure the islands budget can meet local needs and not be squeezed any further."
