Disappointment over refusal to support call for pilot fuel discount scheme in the Highlands and Islands.
11 June 2010

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Peter Peacock has expressed disappointment that Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson has refused to back his call for the Westminster Government to run a pilot fuel discount scheme in the region.

Mr Peacock asked Mr Stevenson in Parliament if he agreed that there was ambiguity in the Coalition Governmentís statement about holding pilot fuel discount schemes in remote areas, as it was unclear whether it referred to the possibility of holding such schemes being investigated or whether they were committed to them taking place.

Mr Peacock then asked Mr Stevenson whether he supported his call for one of the pilot schemes to be located in the Highlands and Islands.

However, the Ministerís response merely indicated that the SNP Government was in contact with and would pressurise the Coalition Government on the fuel issue.

Mr Peacock said: "I was very disappointed that Mr Stevenson didnít feel he could support my call for the Highlands and Islands to be included as one of the pilot schemes.
