Peter Peacock continues to fight for Lochboisdale to Mallaig ferry route

09 April 2009

Peter Peacock, Highlands and Islands regional Labour MSP is vowing to maintain pressure for a new ferry route between Lochboisdale and Mallaig.

It follows answers from Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson on the issue.

Mr Peacock said: "It looks like the Minister has the possibility of a new ferry firmly on the back burner, with no sense of urgency apparent from these answers.

"The world economic turndown may well have thrown up the possibility of a ferry having become available and I regret the Minister isn't going to have this pursued.

"It is also to very regrettable that the whole issue seems to have been shunted off into a much wider ferry review.

"The case for the Lochboisdale to Mallaig ferry route is as strong as ever and progress is needed.

"The Minister needs to clear the log jam and make clear he supports this new route and is doing everything in his power to deliver it.

"Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case and people are feeling very let down by the SNP government on this issue.

"I will continue to take every opportunity to push the case for the new ferry and make sure the needs of the Uists are kept in front of the minister."
